
Many believe Maha Mrityunjay Mantra to be a mantra that can conquer death and connect human beings to their own inner divinity. It is also said to have a strong healing power and can cure diseases declared incurable even by the doctors. Hindus believe that recitation of the mantra ignites a fire within that consumes all negativity and purifies entire system. Recitation of the mantra creates vibration that pulsates through every cell, every molecule of human body and tears away the veil of ignorance.

It is believed that Lord Shiva gave this powerful Shiva Mantra to sage Shukracharaya after his great penance. Besides, it is said to protect the one who chants against accidents and misfortunes of every kind. Maha Mrityunjay Mantra is known by various names such as Rudra Mantra referring to the furious form of Lord Shiva, Tryambakam Mantra signifying Lord Shiva’s three eyes and Mrita- Sanjivini Mantra due to its life-restoring power. It is said that chanting of Shiva Mantra generates divine vibrations that ward off all the negative and evil forces and creates a powerful protective shield. Also known as the Moksha Mantra of Lord Shiva, chanting of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is said to create divine vibrations that heals. The hymn in which it is found begins with eleven stanzas honoring the forces of nature (the maruts) said to be the children of Rudra/Shiva. Trayambaka is the three eyed one (where the third eye signifies the giver of knowledge, which destroys ignorance and releases us from the cycle of death and rebirth). The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rig Veda (Mandala VII, Hymn 59). May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality, Even as the cucumber is severed from bondage to the creeper. Sankara is sana (blessings) and Kara (the Giver). Meaning: We Meditate on the Three-eyed reality Which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance. Like the fruit falls off from the bondage of the stem, may we be liberated from death.

The Mahamrityunjaya Yantra, is used to have a disease free long life and is charged with the chanting of. Even hearing the Om Tryambakam Mantra (Mahamrityunjay Mantra) chanting has immense healing power. The mantra is a prayer to Lord Shiva who is addressed as Sankara and Trayambaka. We worship the three-eyed One, who is fragrant and who nourishes all. The high vibration of Maha Mrityunjaya jaap can remove negative energies from the atmosphere of the place, charging it with positive energies. Worshipping him may we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality just as the ripe cucumber easily separates itself from the binding stalk. We worship The Three-Eyed Lord Shiva who is fragrant and who increasingly nourishes the devotees. And this way Markandeya won over his death with some secret mantra and this secret mantra is known as Maha Mrityunjay Mantra.Om. He said he is impressed by the child’s Intelligence and penance and ordered Yamraj to leave Markandeya and go back. Suddenly Lord Shiva appeared in front of Markandeya and Lord Yamraj. After this Lord Yamraj, himself came on earth to take the life of Markandeya but he was holding on Shivling so tightly that it becomes almost impossible for Yamraj to take him from there but somehow he managed to put the noose on him. After some time, on his 12th birthday, one of the Yumdut arrived on the earth to take Markandeya to yumlok but he was too involved in the prayer and therefore he was unable to take him. Markandeya after listening to the story of his inevitable started his own penance in front of Lord Shiva. After a little hesitation, both of them narrated him the whole story. Markandeya observed his parents sadness and insisted on them, to tell the truth behind their sadness.

When their son, Markandeya, approached to the age of 12, the truth of his death started to take the peace of their mind and made them depressed. Sage Marikandu and his wife decided not to tell the truth to their son. Sage Marikandu choose the boon of getting an intelligent son with a short life of 12 years. Lord Shiva was very impressed by their devotion and ask them to make a choice between an intelligent boy with a short life or a son with low intelligence but a long life. The story behind this mantra is that a Sage Marikandu and his wife Marudmati took a long penance to Lord Shiva in the hope of getting a son as a boon.
